| Kim Harrison was born in Preston,
Lancashire and went to Hutton Grammar School. He studied medical
sciences at Selwyn College, Cambridge and clinical medicine at
University College Hospital, London. He first became interested in
Respiratory disease whilst working as a junior doctor in the East End of
London. After gaining further experience in General Internal Medicine,
Kim obtained a post as a Registrar at the Brompton Hospital. It was
here, working for Professor Margaret Turner-Warwick that he developed an
interest in Diffuse Parenchymal Lung Disease and pulmonary fibrosis. He
subsequently, became a Research Fellow and later Honorary Lecturer at
the National Heart and Lung Institute where he wrote his MD thesis on
‘Pulmonary collagen metabolism in systemic sclerosis’ under the
supervision of Professor Geoff Laurent. Kim left London in 1994 to
become Consultant Chest Physician at Morriston Hospital, Swansea where
he has developed the Respiratory Unit’s reputation for clinical
excellence, teaching and research. |
 |
| Kim first joined the
BALR in 1987 and has been a staunch supporter of the Association ever
since. He served on the BALR Committee as Publications Secretary from
1993-8. Since moving to Wales, he has balanced a full commitment to
clinical medicine with an ongoing research interest in the pathogenesis
of pulmonary fibrosis and more recently the aetiology of cough in
pulmonary fibrosis. He believes passionately that dialogue between basic
scientists and clinicians forms the basis of good clinical research and
seeks to promote this wherever possible. He was elected Chairman of the
BALR in 2005. |
