Latest news from the BALR
The 2007 Summer Meeting of the British Association for Lung Research was held on the 5th - 7th Sept 2007 at the John Hume Building, NUI Maynooth in Ireland. This meeting entitled “Gene and Stem Cell Therapies for Lung Diseases” was organised by Dr Shirley O’Dea who produced an exciting programme of high quality talks on the highly topical area of gene and stem cell therapies for lung diseases.

The meeting included presentations from international speakers including Jean-Michel Sallenave (Paris), Susan Reynolds (Denver), Jim Fink (San Carlos, CA) and Steve Dubinett (Los Angeles) as well as a number of more “home grown” talents.
In keeping with the tradition of the BALR the meeting also included the annual Young Scientists Competition with the prize being won by Ciara Field-Corbett for her talk “Soluble signals from mechanically disrupted lung tissue induce lung-related gene expression in bone marrow-derived cells in vitro”. An open session oral presentations and the Poster Session provided opportunities to view new data presented by emerging young pulmonary scientists.

As well as the exciting science attendees were also treated to the delights of Dinner at the Guinness Storehouse in Dublin.

Previous news from the BALR
The 2006 Summer Meeting of the British Association for Lung Research was held on the 9th - 11th July at Ranmoor Hall in Sheffield. This meeting entitled “Innate Immunity and Host Defense in the Lung” was attended by over 75 people and marked the 25th Anniversary of the founding of BALR. The program contained the usual mix of exciting pulmonary science and a relaxed social program, included a meeting dinner at which Professor Geoff Laurent gave an informal overview of the history of the Association and a formal presentation was made to our outgoing President, Professor Terry Tetley in recognition of her service to the BALR. We were also fortunate to have Professor Stephen Holgate give an outstanding historical perspective on developments in respiratory biology over the last 25 years.

The formal side of the meeting included presentations from a number of international speakers; Cliff Taggart (Dublin), Jay Kolls (Pittsburgh), Pieter Hiemstra (Lieden), Dominique Ferrandon (Strasbourg) and Ralf Schumann (Berlin), as well as speakers from within the UK. The proceedings of the meeting will be published in Experimental Lung Research later in the year.

The young Scientist prize was awarded to Jose Yuste, Centre for Respiratory Research. University College London, for his talk entitled “ Serum amyloid P protects against Streptococcus pneumoniae pneumonia’, whilst the Poster Prize was awarded to Dr Lynne Bingle, University of Sheffield for her poster entitled “Comparative expression of SPLUNC1, SPLUNC2 and LPLUNC1 in normal and diseased lung.” Both of these prizes were generously sponsored by the Colt Foundation. The Colt Foundation also supplied travel bursaries for the meeting and other sponsors included AstraZeneca and GlaxoSmithKline. We are most grateful for this continued support, which did much to ensure that we could invite such a distinguished group of speakers and guests to the meeting.
